Completed R&D projects
- METRIC (ESA)+
The METRIC project successfully made advancements in the development cycle of structural space components by focusing on manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing (MAIT) activities. This collaborative effort, involving ESA, Jotne, FFI, and IDEAS, was conducted under the ARTES program and aimed to leverage advanced technologies such as digital twin, embedded sensor networks, and additive manufacturing to enhance cost-efficiency and quality assurance.
A key milestone of the project was the creation of a demonstrator that implemented these technologies. Relevant data from the development process, including information from a mobile sensor network operating in the component's environment, was collected and archived. Using this data, the METRIC project successfully established a digital twin (DT) of the structural component, ensuring interoperability and long-term relevance through adherence to the open standard ISO 10303.
Through the implementation of process monitoring and the establishment of a digital repository based on ISO 10303, significant optimizations were achieved. Notably, the project achieved a time reduction of close to 60% in milling rough cutting, enhancing production efficiency and reducing cost. Additionally, the project led to significant reductions in Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and Computed Tomography (CT) measurement program and result setup times, streamlining the quality assurance process.
The METRIC has project demonstrated the potential of advanced technologies, data-driven approaches and digital twin technology based on open standards to optimize the development of space components, paving the way for continued advancements in the field and contributing to cost savings and enhanced quality assurance in the aerospace industry.
- CONFORMANCE (ESA)+
CONFORMANCE is a project that Jotne performed from 2019 to 2021 for the spacecraft operations part of ESA, that is, ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany (ESA Contract No. 4000129198/19/D/KS). The name stands for “Study for a generic Configuration, Engineering Information, Inventory and Maintenance Application based on a standardised Data Model”. The scope of this asset management at ESOC is the antenna ground stations that the Agency operates world-wide.
The Agency wanted to investigate the state-of-the-art of applications for configuration, engineering information, inventory and maintenance with special attention to the use of a standardized data model for data representation and exchange. Focus was also on how a generic – not an ESA specific - application could fulfil the operational requirements. If the Agency sometime in the future may want to adopt the solutions that the study will identify, no Agency specific developments shall be required. Instead, the generic repository shall have a market beyond the Agency and probably beyond the space sector.
The application that the Agency is currently using for product configuration, support and maintenance today is the ESTRACK (ESA Tracking Stations Network) Configuration DataBase (ECDB). In the context of this study, the ECDB is a use case of how configuration, support and maintenance are done today for ESTRACK. This use case provided examples of requirements, solutions and shortfalls that the study took into account when designing and implementing a prototype of a generic repository.
Jotne applied and further developed its EDMtruePLM application to meet the Agency requirements. This application uses ISO 10303-239, Product Lifecycle Support (PLCS), as the data dictionary of its repository. ISO 10303 is a standard consisting of multiple data models for engineering domains and is known as STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data).
Functionality that was specifically validated by CONFORMANCE include the following:
• Database replication scenario for offline working
• Data migration - Transfer of legacy data (ECDB) to EDMtruePLM
• Data Import from spreadsheets
• Notifications
• Flexible Search & Filter Capabilities for large amounts of data
• Configurable Reference ID Generator
• Graphical Movement of Objects
• File Attachments
• Configurable history tracking
• Browsing of structured information. - DEFINE (ESA)+
The main objective of the ESA DEFINE project “Multidisciplinary 3D Digital Models For AIT Environment” (ESA Contract No. 4000129319/19/NL/BJ, 2019-2022) was to increase the integration of 3D digital models to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the assembly, integration and test procedures and documentation, fully integrated into the overall space system lifecycle.
This was achieved by use of existing, standard formats like STEP AP242 (ISO 10303-242), AP209 (ISO 10303-209), STEP-TAS and alike, and with the development of specific software routines to achieve the integration of digital models and to increase the TRL of the solution from 3 to 6.
The implementation of the DEFINE requirements was done in Jotne’s Simulation Data Management application, EDMopenSimDM. This application consists of a client and a server that allow team-collaboration for managing, visualizing, sharing and archiving design, simulation and testing data. EDMopenSimDM’s main benefit is that it integrates all product data in the data model of ISO 10303-209.
ISO 10303 is a standard consisting of multiple data models for engineering domains and is known as STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data). AP209 is an Application Protocol (AP) within ISO 10303, which is a complete data model for handling PLM, CAD, simulation and physical test data (i.e., structural and thermal testing). AP242 is a different AP within the standard which is implemented in most CAD applications for import and export of design data. AP242 is a subset of AP209, thus, by supporting AP209, AP242 is also supported.
EDMopenSimDM implements this standard by integrating the AP209 data model schema. Data sets from CAD, simulation and testing are converted to AP209 models (which are populations of the AP209 schema).
Having models from different sources in the same format allows the creation of relationships between the content of the different models. The concept of such integrated model is referred to as a digital twin.
- Arrowhead Tools (HORIZON 2020)+
New tools to help the engineering industry put IoT to smart use.
From everyday uses to large-scale industry applications, the Internet of Things (IoT) is expanding at an accelerating speed. The EU-funded Arrowhead Tools project will create advanced new digitisation and automation tools for the European engineering industry. These tools will bridge the gap that currently prevents total integration of operational technology – for example how efficiently the engineering industry is leveraging IoT and the ‘system of systems’ into its products. The project is expected to reduce the costs of developing and introducing flexible and secure digitisation and automation solutions by about 20 to 50 %. This will make Europe more competitive and create new jobs and business opportunities, while also reducing energy consumption and the environmental footprint.

KYKLOS 4.0 is developing an Advanced Circular and Agile Manufacturing Ecosystem based on rapid configurable manufacturing processes and individualized consumer preferences. Jotne's PLM repository will be the central digital twin repository for standards-based access to lifecycle engineering data.
- FORTIFIER (NRC)+
Artificial Intelligence enhanced digital factory twins for wire harness manufacturing
The interaction between design and production planning is always a challenge, and the changes of requirements by the customer create additional uncertainty. The FORTIFIER project aims to address this obstacle by introducing digital twins for wire harness design and manufacturing. On a high level, our team will prototype the "Wire harness factory for the future", where various workflows will be integrated to support overarching objectives like exploiting next generation engineering tools, reducing time and cost of wire harness production, and at the same time increasing product quality by deploying an AI based Digital Twin for the factory.
The Fortifier project is the joint work between Norwegian and German partners to provide, ʻA next generation solution for wire harness manufacturersʼ, which has been accomplished by applying and developing further the following technologies: - Artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance Industry 4.0 based design of wire harnesses - Robotics for flexible production - Open standards of data models for industrial data to enable integration of wire harness lifecycle data - Integration of blockchain solutions for trusted and secure supply chain management.
